In 1974, the University of Houston acquired the assets of the South Texas Junior College and opened the University of Houston Downtown College (UHDC) at One Main Street as a four-year university. By the late 1970s, the Texas legislature had approved the UHDC as an independent university within the University of Houston system.
Focused on meeting the needs of Houston’s diverse and dynamic workforce, the university’s first four-year degree is a Bachelor of Science in criminal justice, where resident students pay $4 per credit hour. By the early 1980s, it was clear that the UHDC was more than just a college, and the word “college” had officially been dropped from the institution’s name.
UHD entered the 1990s as the third fastest growing university in Texas and focused on becoming a premier metropolitan university that attracted traditional and non-traditional students as well as working professionals. The campus continued to grow with the opening of the Academic Building and the Jesse H. Jones Student Life Center.
UHD is fully approved by the Texas Legislature and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Council to offer graduate programs, starting with a Master’s degree in criminal justice and then expanding to master’s degrees in security Administration and professional writing and education. UHD will expand its partnership with Lone Star College (LSC) over time, And offers selected degrees and programs at UHD-Northwest’s LSC-University Center, LSC-CY Fair, LSC-Kingwood, and LSC-Atascocita. Bridging agreements have been signed with surrounding community colleges, creating a pathway for transfer students to earn degrees at UHD.
The expansion and physical growth of the university continued in the late 1990s. The Willow Street Pump station (listed in the National Register of Historic Places) was renovated and the Commercial Street building opened, providing a new home for the School of Public Service. In the early 2000s, the Shea Street building opened as the school’s new home. UHD celebrated another milestone in 2012 when it enrolled its first batch of MBA students at the business school.
