The Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) or Malaysian Certificate of Education is a national examination taken by all fifth grade secondary school students in Malaysia.
It is equivalent to the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) in England, Wales and Northern Ireland; National 4/5 in Scotland; and GCE Ordinary Levels (O Levels) in the Commonwealth. This is the eleventh grade graduation exam. SPM is an examination taken by secondary school students before further study in matriculation, STPM, matriculation or diploma courses.
The exams are set and reviewed by the Malaysian Examinations Council. For students attending international schools, the equivalent examination they take is the International General Certificate of Secondary Education examination, and the Unified Examination Certificate is equivalent to the advanced level. All SPM examination papers are considered official confidential property and are protected by the Official Secrets Act 1972 of Malaysia.
In 2021, the Ministry of Education Malaysia introduced a new SPM format for the new KSSM syllabus, replacing the old SPM format of the old KBSM syllabus. For English, the English paper adopts the Common European Framework of Reference syllabus, and the transcript is issued together with the SPM certificate.

SPM allows Malaysians to continue their studies up to pre-university level. There were originally two versions of the SPM, introduced in 1964: the Malaysian Certificate of Education for students studying in English schools and the SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) for students studying in national schools. The difference between the two is that SPM is conducted in Bahasa Malaysia (Malay) while MCE is conducted in English.
MCE was terminated in 1976 when the Department for Education took over examinations from the University of Cambridge Local Examinations Board (UCLES) and merged it with SPM. The predecessors of these examinations were SPPTM (Sijil Pelajaran Persekutuan Tanah Melayu. Started in 1962) and FMC (Federation of Malaya Certificate. Started in 1957) before the federation of Malaysia.
