The proposal is part of a larger plan to restructure higher education in South Africa. The first step in the merger was UPE’s merger with Vista PE on January 2, 2004, followed by PE Technikon and UPE on January 1, 2005.

NMMU was formed in 2005 through the merger of the Port Elizabeth Technical College and the University of Port Elizabeth. In 2004, prior to the merger, UPE had taken control of the Port Elizabeth campus of the University of Vista. PE Technikon had a satellite campus in Georges that was also incorporated.

The first rector of the University was Chief Justice Pius Langa, and Justice Ronnie Pillay was the first president of the Council. Rolf Stumpf was the University’s first Vice President and Chief Executive Officer and was succeeded by Professor Derrick Swartz on January 1, 2008. Professor Sibongile Muthwa became the current vice-chancellor after his appointment in 2017.

The name of the university was officially changed from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University to Nelson Mandela University on 20 July 2017.

The ceremonial head of the university is the Rector, who grants all qualifications in the name of the university. The Vice-Chancellor is responsible for the day-to-day running of the University. The Vice-Chancellors for Research, Innovation and Internationalization, learning and teaching, personnel and Operations and the Registrar assist the Vice-chancellors in their duties as secretaries of the University Council. Each faculty has an executive Dean, as well as learning and teaching. Other governing board positions are Dean of Students, and presidents of the Missionvale and George Campuses.

The current principal is Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi, who was appointed in 2018. The current vice-chancellor is Sibongile Muthwa, who was appointed in 2017. Dr. Kaluke Mawila is the principal of the George Campus and the current principal of the Missionvale Campus is Phakama Ntshongwana.
