Lindenwood University traces its roots to American explorer, soldier, Indian agent and politician George Champlin Sibley and his wife, educator Mary Easton Sibley, in the early 19th century. In 1808, acting governor and friend Frederick Bates promoted Sibley to chief of Fort Osage in western Missouri (near present-day Kansas City, Missouri). At Fort Osage, Sibley immediately set about establishing relations with the neighboring Osage tribe. He also met Mary Easton, the daughter of Rufus Easton, a renowned St. Louis prosecutor and Missouri’s second attorney general. The couple married in 1815. During Sibleys at Fort Osage, Mary began teaching children at the fort.
