Trinity College London (TCL) is an examination board based in London, United Kingdom, which offers graded and diploma qualifications (up to postgraduate level) across a range of disciplines in the performing arts and English language learning and teaching in over 70 countries worldwide.

Trinity College London was founded in 1872 as the External examination Board of Trinity College of Music (today part of the Trinity Laban School of Music and Dance) and began offering music examinations for external students in 1877. Over time, Trinity has expanded to offer examinations in other areas of the performing arts and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).

With more than 850,000 candidates in more than 60 countries, the Trinity Qualification is designed to help learners reach their potential.

Trinity College London offers graded music qualifications in music theory and a range of performance for stringed instruments, singing, piano, electronic keyboards, brass, woodwind and percussion. The grading starts at the initial level and then is numbered from level 1 to 8, increasing in difficulty. Candidates are graded in three categories – performance of musical works, technical work such as scales, and ancillary tests such as sight reading and improvisation. Candidates are graded on a scale from 1 to 100, with 60 being a passing score. Candidates have the flexibility to choose the tracks and tests prepared for each section.

In addition to grade exams, TCL also offers basic, intermediate and advanced certificates in music. TCL also offers music diplomas at three levels – Associate (ATCL, equivalent to the working standards required by the UK Higher Education Certificate) and AmusTCL, Licentiate (LTCL, equivalent to the working standards required by the UK) Bachelor’s degree and Scholarship (FTCL, equivalent to the UK). Equivalent to the standard of work required for a UK master’s degree).

In 2012, the exam board introduced rock and pop grading exams for bass, drums, guitar, keyboards and vocals.
