The Australian Institute of Fitness (AIF) is a privately owned, registered training organization, and the largest fitness training organization in Australia.
In 1979, we started operating in Perth as Health Studio curriculum. In 2000, we merged five state-level fitness training plans and became the first national fitness training institution in Australia.
In 1979, sports educator and author Nigel Champion began offering the Health Studio Attendant course in Perth, the first of its kind in Australia. In 1981, Champion collaborated with Dr. Garry Egger, an Australian academic, to establish the ACHPER Fitness Leader course group in Sydney. Prior to joining, he founded the Australian Fitness Network with fitness entrepreneur Greg Hurst in 1986.
In 2000, Hurst & Champion combined five existing Fitness training programs with Russell Creagh, Monty Dortkamp, Dr Grant Pavia and Kerry McEvoy – ACHPER Fitness Leader; Australian Fitness Network; Association of Fitness Professionals; National Institute of Fitness; And the Australian Institute of Fitness — creating the Australian National Institute of Fitness (AIF).
Russell Creagh was the first chief executive Officer of the merged AIF from 2001 to 2006, followed by Greg Hurst (2006-2011) and Dyanne Ward (2011-2016). In December 2016, then-AIF Queensland chief executive Steve Pettitt was appointed its national chief executive following the retirement of Dyanne Ward.
Since its inception, the founding entity has offered a variety of fitness industry-specific certification and training courses. These courses were incorporated into the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) in accordance with the Federal Government’s 1996 Training Reform Agenda. Since 1996, AIF has provided nationally recognized fitness, massage and business qualifications in accordance with AQF regulatory standards.
