Anna University (Chennai) consists of four colleges — College of Engineering (CEG, Guindy Campus), Alagappa College of Technology (ACT, Guindy Campus), Madras Institute of Technology (MIT, Chromepet Campus) and the School of Architecture and Planning (SAP, Guindy Campus).

The first version of the University of Anna was established in 1978, and various governments have continuously changed the structure and scope of the university. On September 14, 2011, a bill was passed to merge the universities. The merger was completed in August 2012.

In 2011 and 2012, these members were merged back into one affiliated university, and the four regional universities continued to function as the regional campuses of the university.
