Goldsmiths, University of London, officially the Goldsmiths’ College, is a constituent research university of the University of London in England.
According to Quacquarelli Symonds (2021), Goldsmiths are ranked 12th in communications and media studies, 15th in art and design, and top 50 in anthropology, sociology and performing arts. In 2020, the university enrolled more than 10,000 undergraduates and postgraduates. 37% of the students are from outside the UK and 52% of undergraduates are mature students (aged 21 or over when they start their studies). In addition, about a third of the students at Goldsmiths are graduate students.
In 1904, the college merged with the University of London and was re-established as Goldsmiths College (the apostrophe was dropped in 1993, and the word “college” was dropped when the name was changed in 2006). At this point, Goldsmiths is the largest teacher training institution in the country. The training function was later expanded to include teacher refresher courses, Graduate Certificate in University Education and Art Teacher Certificate courses. The college has also opened its own nursery.
Shortly after the merger, Goldsmiths added an Art new building designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield behind the main building in 1907. The decision to evacuate the college’s staff and students to Nottingham University College during the Second World War proved wise at the time and in the aftermath, as the main building was firebombed and burned in 1940 (it was not finally restored until 1947).
The number of students at Goldsmiths increased rapidly in the 1960s. It was during this period that Goldsmiths began to build a reputation in the arts and social sciences and offered many new teacher training qualifications. The original main building was expanded and the Lockwood Building, Whitehead Building, Education Building, Warmington Tower, and St. James Hall was built to accommodate the influx of new students. The University has also acquired many historic buildings in the surrounding area, including the brilliant former Deptford Town Hall and Laurie Grove Baths buildings. The Richard Hoggart Building, Deptford Town Hall and Laurie Grove Baths have all retained Grade II listed status.
