Camosun College is a public college located in Saanich, British Columbia, Canada. The college has two campuses, Lansdowne and Interurban, with a total enrollment of ~20,000 students (including Continuing Education).

The origins of the college began in 1914 when the Young Building was Victoria’s first normal school, situated on part of the Hudson’s Bay Company’s 3 hectares (7.5 acre) site, now part of the Lansdowne campus. The school had an enrollment of about 275 students.

During World War II, Yang Lou was converted into a military hospital. In 1946, the building was restored to its original function as an educational institution shared by the Normal School and Victoria College, which was merged in 1956.

In 1967, normal School and Victoria College moved to the Gordon Head campus of the University of Victoria and the Adult Institute was established by the Board of The Greater Victoria School. Located in the current Ewing Building, the Adult Institute was the first center in Canada to offer day programs for adults wishing to move up to high school graduation.

Local interest in community colleges grew, and on 9 October 1970, Residents of Victoria voted in favor of establishing one. The plan of the Juan de Fuca Academy was implemented. On October 27, 1970, the provincial government officially approved the establishment of the university.

In 1971, college councillors voted to change the name and chose “Camosun” (pronounced cam-vogue-sun) because it was an early name for Victoria. It was originally the name of Lekwungen (Songhees) for the Victorian region, where different bodies of water meet and change. By September 1971, the final step towards university realization was taken when Camosun (Lansdowne campus) and BC Vocational School (Interurban Campus) merged to form British Columbia’s ninth community college.

Throughout 2021, the school is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Commissioned by alumni and indigenous artist Dylan Thomas to paint a special anniversary mark for the Camossung story. The trademark bearing the words “Camosun College” was filed with the Intellectual Property Office of Canada trademark Database on February 22, 2008.

Camosun College enrolled its first students in September 1971, when it was a two-year institution offering college transfer, career, and upgrading programs to residents of Southern Vancouver Island. For the 2019/20 academic year, the school has more than 1,200 staff and a budget of $147.6 million.
