La Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería (UNI) es una casa de estudios universitarios radicada en la ciudad de Managua, Nicaragua, estatal y autónoma.
The earliest signs of engineering in Nicaragua can be traced back to 1680, when the “SAN Ramon” Trident Seminary was established in the city of Leon, where the first courses in arithmetic, geometry, algebra and physics were taught, and the seminary was granted university status by royal decree on January 10, 1812.
The birth of UNI took place in the 1980s, when a committee composed of the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Central America (UCA) and the Dean of the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua (UNAN) created an institution to combine engineering and architecture teaching in Nicaragua. On 7 February 1983, the National University of Engineering (UNI) began teaching engineering and architecture in the technical planning phase, as formally decided by the National Reconstruction Government Committee.
The revolutionary government set about redistributing jobs and professionalizing the universities. So UNAN Managua specialized in medicine (a very old profession at this Alma mater); UCA in humanities and administrative careers, then UNI specialises in engineering. When UNI was born, UCA lost more than 2,000 students, as well as infrastructure, land and laboratory equipment. On the other hand, it won the support of the revolutionary countries through the 6 percent stipulated by the constitution.
Throughout the history of the University of Nicaragua, there have been conflicts between CNU member institutions and among students due to differences in ideas and ideals. At the same time, however, these institutions are working together for the development and freedom of the Nicaraguan people. Since its inception, NUE has trained professionals and researchers with human sensitivity to respond to society’s needs in creative and innovative ways.
Continuing to pursue the assumptions of excellence, social responsibility and an institutional education model, UNI is committed to promoting scientific research among young people in response to the needs of Nicaraguan society. For this reason, the Vice-Chancellor’s Office of Research and Development, through its Research Council, convenes the UNI University community every other year to propose innovation, research or development projects within the framework of Technological Fair Tecno UNI.
